Volcán Poas

Today's field trip took us to Poas Volcano, which is north of the capital, San Jose.
We left at 7am and drove two hours to reach the peak. The final 30 minutes of the drive were beautiful as we ascended the mountain and gazed on amazing views of the valley below.

The volcano itself is not a perfect cone but instead boasts an amazing crater lake. The trick, however, is being able to see this crater. The volcano is home to one of the only true cloud forest (or elfin forests) in Costa Rica and thus is almost constantly covered in fog.
And guess what, that's what we saw....Haha! But it's okay, because you could sense the magnitude and feel the cold moist air whip past your face. It was very refreshing and reminded me of SLO. My heart was glad. =)

After waiting in hopes of the fog clearing for nearly 40 minutes we walked some of the nearby trails and learned about the species adaptions for such a cold, windy environment.

On our way back down the mountain we ate lunch at a little soda and purchased local sweet snacks to munch on the ride back.

The day was fun and we returned to San Ramón early, which made me happy. I hadn't seen my family in over 24 hours!
